Salt was created with the mission to help keep people safe by providing access to the most forward-thinking defense technology available. The company's inception, like many worthwhile endeavors, began with a personal story – a personal need for something better.
The idea behind Salt was born in 2015 when the founder and his wife moved from California to Chicago and bought their first house. Unfortunately, their excitement was short-lived. Just a few days after moving in, a young man was shot and killed on their street. This tragic event shook their neighborhood and left them, like many other households, searching for a way to feel safe in case the violence outside their door decided to come in.
This random act of violence brought their family together with co-founder Andy, who was then the Global Vice President of Engineering at Honeywell and their neighbor. In the aftermath of the shooting, they all started looking for a way to feel secure again. However, the available options were limited. On one side, there were traditional firearms, which required tactical training, resolve to take a life, and posed risks of unintentional accidents, making them intimidating for the founder's wife to use. On the other side, there were traditional pepper sprays or tasers, effective only if the danger was right on top of them. Neither option met their needs for a device that all family members could confidently use to stop an intruder from a safe distance.
Determined to find a solution, they decided to create exactly what they needed. After many long nights, the collaboration of brilliant engineers, great partnerships, and significant breakthroughs, they developed an innovative piece of defense technology: a gun powered by air that shoots a bullet made of a powerful chemical instead of lead. This gun was easy for everyone to use, effective whether it hit the target or not, and capable of keeping loved ones safe. Initially built for their own families, they quickly realized its potential to help others and decided to produce it for anyone seeking a new option to protect their families. Thus, they quit their jobs and began building pepper spray guns.
Today, every member of Salt continues to work diligently to ensure the safety of their customers and their loved ones. The company is expanding its products and ambitions, staying true to its promise: to continuously find, design, and build the best, most dependable technology that people can trust when they need it most.
